Women's Health Resource Center
Useful Sites
National Library of Medicine - Sexual Health About this site: An arm of the National Institutes of Health, the National Library of Medicine is a great resource for common questions on sexual health. The site features answers to questions on women's and men's health, sexuality in later life, and hormones. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/sexualhealthgeneral.html Pluses: There are Spanish-language versions of some articles. Minuses: Some of the information is limited and covers only general health issues. Except for occasional news stories on HIV, there are, for example, no stories on sexually transmitted diseases. Best feature: Links to features such as a sexual health glossary and graphics such as the Atlas of Female Reproductive Organs. |
Estronaut About this site: Estronaut, a forum for women's health, offers up-to-date information on everything from gynecological problems to sexuality and fitness. In addition to being arranged by topic, articles are also organized by age group -- adolescence, reproductive, midlife, and mature. Each page also has helpful facts and tips. (http://www.estronaut.com/) Pluses: Submit your women's health question to Dr. Karen Sarpolis and receive an individual response. Minuses: The same articles appear on multiple topic pages, making navigation confusing and repetitive. Best feature: The articles cover topics, like women and grief and nutrition for female athletes, you aren't likely to find on other Web sites. |
NY Times Women's Health About this site: This special women's health section combines the best of the Times' own health reporting with excellent reference material from the American Medical Women's Association, the Harvard Guide to Women's Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (http://www.nytimes.com/specials/women/whome/) Pluses: Clear, reliable, and well-organized information. Minuses: Some links to older NY Times stories tend to expire and the site is not updated as often as the newspaper's main site. Best feature: You can choose a topic from the "Women's Resources" section for sources of more information on everything from AIDS to STDs. |
American Heart Association Women's Web About this site: Think only men get heart attacks? If so, this site will dispel that myth--and help you learn what risks women face for heart disease and stroke. You can also determine your personal risk with AHA's heart attack and stroke risk assessment quiz. (http://www.women.americanheart.org/) Pluses: A forum offers a place to share heart-attack prevention habits and ideas. Minuses: If you already have heart disease, the information here may be of little use. Best feature: Great articles for women offer advice and information on how to protect the health of your whole family. |
